Rashtrapati Bhawan Witnesses a Night of Honours: 65 Receive Padma Awards at Second Civil Investiture Ceremony

Rashtrapati Bhawan was the setting for one of the country’s most anticipated evenings as President Droupadi Murmu conferred Padma Awards upon 65 distinguished individuals at the Second Civil Investiture Ceremony. From the tennis courts to the cricket pitch, from playback studios to silver screens, the evening brought together legends from vastly different worlds under one shared recognition: a lifetime of extraordinary contribution.

Among those honoured were names that have shaped the cultural and sporting fabric of India for decades. Playback singer Alka Yagnik, whose voice has been the emotional backbone of Hindi cinema for over four decades, received her award alongside Malayalam cinema icon Mammootty, whose body of work spans more than 400 films and continues to evolve with rare artistic restlessness. Actor R. Madhavan, tennis legend Vijay Amritraj, and cricketer Rohit Sharma were also among the recipients. The ceremony was the second of its kind this year.

First instituted in 1954, the Padma Awards are among the highest civilian honours the Indian state can bestow. They span a wide arc of human endeavour including art, literature, education, medicine, science and engineering, sports, social work, public affairs, and trade and industry. The breadth of the list is by design: the awards are meant to reflect the idea that distinction takes many forms, and that a researcher in a rural clinic and a legend on the cricket field may both deserve to stand in the same hall.
