India produced a dominant display in compound archery at the Asian Games, winning gold in both the women’s team and mixed team events while securing a 2028 Olympic quota place in the mixed team event.

Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav defeated South Korea’s Jungyoon Park and Choi Eun Gyu in a tense mixed team final, winning 158-157 after a shoot-off. China’s Fangyao F Wei and Jinyi Liu claimed bronze. India had reached the final after defeating Thailand with 156-155 in the semifinals.

The Indian pair started strongly, leading 40-39 after the opening end and extending the advantage to two points in the second. Korea narrowed the gap to 118-117 after Chikitha hit a nine in the third end. Korea then produced a perfect score, putting India under pressure.

Chikitha struck another nine with her final shot, but Sahil held his nerve with a bull’s-eye to level the scores and force a shoot-off. Both Indians hit 10s, while Choi Eun Gyu managed a nine, sealing the Asian Games gold medal for India.

Earlier, India’s women’s compound archery team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep retained its title by defeating China 238-234. The score equalled the world record set by South Korea at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games.

India led 60-58 after the opening end and maintained the same margin in the second before moving 178-176 ahead entering the final end. China faltered under pressure with two nines, while India delivered six perfect 10s to secure gold and equal the world record.

The victory also marked redemption for Jyothi, who had exited the individual event in the pre-quarterfinals after losing to Korean player Kang Yeon-seo.

India’s back-to-back compound archery golds also successfully retained the titles won at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
