Neeru Dhanda created history at the Asian Games 2026, becoming the first Indian shooter to win a gold medal in the women’s trap individual event.

The 26-year-old player showed a strong performance in the final, hitting 28 of 30 targets to claim the top spot. Her victory added another gold to India’s growing medal tally. 

Dhanda had earlier helped India secure silver in the women’s trap team event alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer. The Indian trio finished with 328 points, three points ahead of Kuwait, which won bronze with 325 points while China claimed gold with 346 points.

Neeru also qualified for the individual final after finishing joint-top in the qualification round with a score of 118. Aashima and Manisha missed out on the final after scoring 106 and 104, respectively, to finish 16th and 23rd. 

Athletics added to India’s medal haul with a double podium finish in the men’s javelin throw. Yashvir Singh won silver with a personal-best throw of 85.72 metres, while Rohit Yadav secured bronze with 84.35 metres.

In the men’s long jump, Sreeshankar Murali claimed silver with a best effort of 8.07 metres. Gulveer Singh added another silver in the men’s 1,500 metres after finishing runner-up, following his earlier silver in the 10,000 metres.

In another shooting medal, Esha Singh won silver in the women’s 25m pistol individual event, finishing second with 38 points.

With these results, India moved to 11th place in the Asian Games 2026 medal standings, taking its overall tally to 47 medals – 5 gold, 21 silver, and 21 bronze.
