India Defies Odds to Finish Fourth with 39 Medals at Commonwealth Games 2026

India finished fourth in the Commonwealth Games 2026 standings with 39 medals – 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze – in Glasgow.

Despite competing in a significantly reduced programme that excluded traditional medal-rich sports such as wrestling, badminton, table tennis, hockey and shooting, India managed to make their mark at the Games, which ran from July 23 to August 2.

Boxing spearheaded India’s campaign with a record 10 medals, including an unprecedented seven golds – the most won by any nation in the sport at a single Commonwealth Games. Sakshi Chaudhary emerged as one of India’s standout performers, while Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain added silver in the women’s 75kg category.

Weightlifting also enjoyed another productive Games. Mirabai Chanu completed a historic hat-trick of CWG titles, becoming only the second Indian to win three successive gold medals at the event.

Judo delivered a breakthrough campaign as Asmita Dey became India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games champion in the sport before Harsh Singh joined her on top of the podium later the same day.

In athletics, Gulveer Singh became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two individual medals at a single Commonwealth Games, claiming silver in the men’s 10000m and bronze in the 5000m. Tejaswin Shankar scripted history as India’s first Commonwealth Games decathlon medallist, while Neeraj Chopra marked his return to the Games with silver in the men’s javelin throw after missing Birmingham 2022 through injury.

Overall, 122 Indian athletes competed across eight able-bodied sports and five integrated para sports at Glasgow 2026.
