India etched its name in squash history on Sunday, clinching its maiden Squash World Cup title after a commanding 3-0 victory over Hong Kong China at Chennai’s Express Avenue Mall. Led by a composed performance from teenage sensation Anahat Singh in the decisive rubber, the second-seeded Indian team remained unbeaten throughout the tournament to better its previous best finish of a bronze medal at the 2023 edition. The triumph also saw India become only the fourth nation, after Australia, England and Egypt, to lift the Squash World Cup trophy in the tournament’s five editions, with Chennai hosting the event for the third consecutive time.
After blanking Switzerland and Brazil by identical 4-0 margins in the group stage ties, India dominated South Africa and two-time winners Egypt 3-0 in the quarter and semi-finals, respectively, to earn a title clash at the mixed-team squash event.
On Sunday, veteran Joshna Chinappa, ranked 79th in the PSA rankings, gave India a dream start by stunning world No. 37 Lee Ka Yi 3-1 (7-3, 2-7, 7-5, 7-1) in the opening women’s singles rubber.
Asian Games medallist Abhay Singh, India’s highest-ranked men’s singles player at world No. 29, followed up with an equally assured display, outclassing 42nd-ranked Alex Lau 3-0 (7-1, 7-4, 7-4) in just 19 minutes to extend India’s lead to 2-0.
Playing to seal a historic title, 17-year-old Anahat Singh rose to the occasion with remarkable composure. Facing world No. 31 Tomato Ho, the world No. 28 Indian delivered a clinical 3-0 (7-2, 7-2, 7-5) victory in the third rubber, ensuring India wrapped up the contest without the need for men’s singles national champion Velavan Senthilkumar to take the court against Henry Leung.
