Nitin Nabin, a five-term MLA from Bihar, has been elected as the new National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The announcement was made on January 19th, Monday, following a day-long nomination process at the party headquarters in New Delhi, during which Mr. Nabin emerged as the sole candidate for the post.

Rajya Sabha member K. Laxman, who served as the National Returning Officer for the organisational election held under Sangathan Parv, confirmed that 37 sets of nomination papers were filed in Mr. Nabin’s favour and were found to be valid, declaring Mr. Nabin elected unopposed as BJP’s National President.

At 45, Mr. Nabin became one of the youngest national presidents in the party’s history and the first leader from Bihar to hold the position. His elevation is widely seen as a move towards generational transition within the BJP as it prepares for the political challenges of the coming decade.

Mr. Nabin hails from a political family in Bihar. His father, Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, was a multi-term BJP MLA. In 2006, following his father’s death, Mr. Nabin entered electoral politics while he was close to completing his engineering degree at the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. Since then, he has remained undefeated in Assembly elections, initially representing the Patna West constituency and later the Bankipur seat after delimitation.

In government, Mr. Nabin has held several ministerial portfolios in Bihar. He served as Minister for Roads between August 2021 and 2022, and later handled the Urban Development, Housing, and Law and Justice departments from 2024 to 2025. He currently represents the Bankipur Assembly constituency in Patna district. Mr. Nabin has nearly two decades of experience within the BJP. He rose through the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), serving at both the State and national levels. In Chhattisgarh, he played a key role in campaign strategy and organisational coordination during the 2023 Assembly elections, which saw the BJP return to power in the State.

Mr. Nabin was felicitated at the BJP headquarters by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior party leaders, including Union Ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, J.P. Nadda and Nitin Gadkari. He was formally handed over the certificate of election by Dr. K. Laxman.

Addressing party leaders and workers after assuming office, Mr. Nabin expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and senior BJP leadership for entrusting him with what he described as the party’s highest organisational responsibility. Recalling his political journey since 2006, he termed the occasion a “moment of resolve” and said the BJP would continue to work towards fulfilling the vision of a developed India, as articulated by the Prime Minister.
